emacs24-nox software package provides GNU Emacs editor (without GUI support), you can install in your Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install emacs24-nox
emacs24-nox is installed in your system.
Make ensure the emacs24-nox package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep emacs24-nox *
You will get with emacs24-nox package name, version, architecture and description in a table
